Tcherot pendants are talismans worn most often by the Tuareg people of northern Africa. "Tcherot" in the Tuareg language literally translates as "paper" or "message" in reference to the fact that these objects often enclosed slips of paper with different talismanic writings, from verses of the Quran, to symbols or letters. These often served the purposes of protection from the evil eye, disease, bad luck, etc. The etched designs themselves also often carry symbolic meaning or are simply decorative. Letter-like symbols stamped onto the back of the box are the signature of the maker. Various metals including brass, copper and German silver. Please refer to picture for approximate size.
